JEDDAH − For the first time in the Kingdom, thousands of people were able to enjoy a different kind of entertainment with the Red Bull Flugtag competition, which took place on Thursday in Jeddah Obhur.
The competition included 32 teams who presented their homemade crafts infused with both creativity and humor as they strove for the coveted title.
Red Bull Flugtag, which in English means “Flying Day,” is the biggest competition of its kind and takes place annually in many countries around the world.
Saudi Arabia hosted the event for the first time, the third country in the Middle East to do so after the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
Red Bull Flugtag challenges teams of amateurs to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off from a 30-foot high deck in the hopes of achieving flight. All these crafts plunge into the waters below.
They are not only judged by the flight’s distance but creativity and showmanship as well. The whole idea of the competition is to allow people to come up with innovative shapes that match the specifications and conditions required for the competition.
Each team had a customized craft, with some teams presenting a dance number before flying off the deck. Many crafts had unusual shapes and designs such as a cupcake, a Kentucky Fried Chicken box, a pink perfume bottle and even Superman.
Team Saher achieved the title and longest distance with 207 points and 25 meters, while the Creativity Award went to the Grendizer – RC Jeddah team.
Rounding out the Top 3 are the Flying Carpet with 156 points and the Rocketeers with 138.
The jury consisted of a panel with sport, art and media backgrounds. It featured film director Mamdouh Salem, famous singer Mohammed Al-Zailaee, illusionist Ahmed Al-Bayedh, flight engineer Khalid Jawa and Red Bull athlete Mohammed Al-Bloushy. All of the panel members were watching from the opposite side on a boat.
Since the Red Bull Flugtag started in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, the event has been held more than 100 times in many cities all over the world.
The event in Jeddah was festive and exciting with families enjoying a day where everyone could have a great time.
